Since I did a painting of this character over a year ago, Jim and I have decided it would be a shame to do an octopus character without doing an attempt at bioilluminescance. After doing some tests with a blacklight and phosphorescent clay, I decided it was time to do a redesign with the latest and greatest ideas. The final sculpture will have UV lights in the base shining directly on the character, which will illuminate the patterns that were previously invisible across her body and tentacles. This sculpture is so complicated it will likely take months to complete - but hopefully the end result will be worth the effort.

That's going to be so cool! I'm always impressed with your sculpting, Jon.
Your re-design of Elrae looks awesome!
I love bioluminescence/drak version. I am definitely looking forward to see the sculpture of her.
I like these both a lot! I am curious, though, why you chose to re-vamp the whole picture, rather than just updating your previous version with bioluminescent lighting.
very cool, jon! can't wait to see the final, although i'm sure she will indeed take a while to complete!
Wow this sounds like its going to be amazing! Both of the paintings are great I don't know if you're trying to choose between them, but I couldn't choose.
is this the one jim was saudering teeny tiny parts for?
This reminds me - Atlantis: The Lost Empire, a lot. Brighter version works better for me, GI tattoos can be on that too. Dark or black colors hides all details permanently, but makes things more colorful and more contrast. I also like disney colorful feeling and style, works very well.Sculpture version will takes a lot of work and patience, but you will be fine. :o) good luck with that.
Just came across this blog, very, very interesting and lots of talent.
