Miream

This is the central character in my story - even though she's not the protagonist. I'm planning on doing a maquette of this - just as soon as I'm done with all the other stuff I'm supposed to do - so maybe in five years or so.
This is one of those images that I love right now, but I'm sure I'll hate it in about two weeks. Since I didn't have any source for the figure and costume it's more stylized - which means trouble for me most of the time. Any suggestions on getting a stylized look while using source material?

First what I like: Loving the lines in the face and arms, and overall I'm loving the modeling of the upper torso and cloth. Light sources are schweet.

What I think could be changed or improved: I think she needs more mass in the hips, in comparison to her head and shoulders.

Also, most of the blue, glowing energy is static, but it starts to stream and form an interesting line at the tip of the sword; unfortunately, that's where your painting cuts off. I'd like to see it extended horizontally and see the energy stream do something funkalicious and compositionally sound.

Sorry I can’t be much help on that. My problem is the other way around, trying to get things to look right without source material. Maybe spend some time studying all the details of your reference and then create your drawing without the reference. Do it from what you remember. I know that sometimes in my sketchbook I try too much to capture everything that I see instead of going with what feels right and letting creativity take over.

Your story looks interesting. I have been working on my own story lately so I know what you are going through. I have done hundreds of drawings of my main character just trying to get it to look right. I’m not sure what right is, but I hope I know it when I get there. So if you ever need anyone to bounce ideas or designs off of I’m always interested.

I’m going to agree with rem-brant in that she needs more hips, and her legs look a little skinny too. Not too many people actually have stick legs, except for some of my ballerina friends but they are the exception. I love her hair and her facial expression. To me, she seems to be really taking a stand for something she believes in and I really envy the conviction that is evident in her stance and eyes. It looks good.
